iPhone and Exchange 2007

 

Although in the past, Apple has never been known for playing nice with "Corporate", the Exchange configuration process to get an iPhone to talk to Exchange 2007 proved to be the easiest we have experienced to date. No one was more shocked than us. All of the work is done on the iPhone, or (in theory) could be done via the iTunes interface, provided you have the Exchange Server set up correctly to begin with, so let's start there. 

 

The Exchange Server 2007 Part

Your Exchange Server has to be already configured to support OWA (Outlook Web Access) properly for the account you are trying to configure. If OWA is not working, don't bother trying to connect the iPhone. Also, If you experience, when using OWA, the screen that tells you that the Site's certificate is invalid and does not recommend you proceed to the Site, then back away. You’ll need to purchase a valid registered certificate, install this properly on the Server and keep this certificate up-to-date in the future. Get your Exchange in order - save the frustration - do it right, or don't do it at all. Call Logical Developments and we'll help. 

 

The iPhone 3g Part

Once the Exchange is perfect, we ran through the steps to set up the iPhone account connection – literally it took about 5 minutes (there is a K-Page posted on our site explaining how to do this). This interfaced the eMail (all eMail folders, not just the Inbox), Calendars and Contacts. Out of the Box, tasks are not sync’ed, however, we have seen apps in the App Store for this. Additionally, in order to sync Public Folders, you need to purchase additional software – in our case (we rely heavily on Public Folders for Shared Master Contact information) we chose FolderMirror as a solution.
